Government or Free Market Failure?
Author: mike | Date: November 30, 2006 | Please Comment!Similarly in Alberta there is an unwillingness or inability of citizens and elected representatives to ensure the government protects the commons and especially the most vulnerable citizens. While spending more per capita than nearly all other provinces we have increasing signs of breakdown in civil society with fewer people participating in political activity, along with the highest rates of domestic violence, alcohol abuse, suicide and depression in the country. When people feel abandoned by their government – whether in the Two-Thirds World or the First World – a negative spiral proceeds. The only remedy is people renewed in their commitment to people, to democratic values and demanding a human scale development that respects the pressing limits of our environment. The Hopi Indian message comes to mind – “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”
