World AIDS Day in Uganda
Author: mike | Date: December 1, 2006 | Please Comment!Uganda is now proud to be the leader in prevention and control on the continent by openly discussing and changing behaviors. Mbale is nestled beneath a table-top mountain about 2 km long and accessible by foot, though steep, as I discovered yesterday. There are three small waterfalls along the mountain face, surrounded in lush growth of an amazing variety of trees and shrubs. I met a policeman related to the orphanage director with whom we had supper two nights ago and he wanted to climb so he led me from our guest house up the rutted red earth road toward one of the waterfalls. It was magical, walking in the cool of the late afternoon with small huts along the path/road and people hanging out in their yards preparing for supper and the evening. Occasionally a motorbike would roar up the hill but most travelers were walking. Children would shout out , from infants to older ones, “Hey Musungu (White Man), how are you?” Many would stand shyly at the side and extend a hand of greeting to the stranger. It was a friendly 2 hours up, providing much needed exercise and a peak into the caring communities I have come to sense here, despite the many social and economic challenges they face daily.

I have been following Darfur since Rawanda, I have supported Save Darfur Coalition and have searched endlessly to find a group in Calgary. I help with a school in Bulati and my 5 year old grandson works side by side with me as we package up packages and school supplies to send all over the world. I have tried to find a group here in Calgary so if anyone can send me information of meet ups and anything I can do.
I am in constant contact with all the political leaders of the world and my brother is working hard in Iraq Palastine and Jordan. Lots of hearts out there raising awareness.
